McFarlane DC Super Powers Whirlybat
A lucky find of sorts, a local shop had this on clearance, mostly due to the damaged back of the box. I decided to grab it since I plan to get a Whirlybat at some point.
Take note of the shape of the propeller attachment. There’s only one way the propellers are getting connected.
There’s a “one time connection only” piece on this set. So, if you plan to return the pieces to the box, do NOT plug this piece all the way in.
It’s not perfect, but not completely plugging the tail section in holds well enough on its own.
Created to be an alternative means of transport in the Silver Age era of comics, this “flying chair” mini-copter vehicle was used by the Dynamic Duo whenever the Batmobile was unavailable. This particular design is based off the Superfriends cartoon version. I can’t quite recall which episode the Whirly Bat appeared in (I guess I’ll have to rewatch the entire Superfriends series to find out later on), but you can easily find screen grab images of the vehicle in its animated form online.
Lol.. Batman sure loves placing his mark all over his gear.
Control panel detail (just stickers, naturally)
“Flight stick” control.
The toy has an action feature, pressing on the exhaust port makes the propeller spin.
To make the tail propeller spin, you’ll have to flick it manually though (it’s YOU powered! Lol).
With the caped crusader.
Cleverly placed “pedals” to help keep the figure seated properly in place.
Too bad Batman’s hands can’t grip onto the controls.
Overall, pretty nifty. I love the action feature and the overall look of the vehicle. It really carries a lot of nostalgia with it and brings back fond memories of a time when we’d get all sorts of vehicles to go with our figures. I wonder if McFarlane will release the Bat Rocket jet from the Superfriends cartoon down the line as well?
Lol.. with all the lazy redeco of Batman and Superman with each wave, at some point, I honestly believe we’ll get a Superfriends redeco of Batman.
