S.H Figuarts Yuyu Hakusho – Yusuke Urameshi (Dark Martial Arts Tournament)

Yusuke Urameshi was a high school delinquent with no real goals in life except skipping school and getting into fights. After sacrificing himself to save a small child from being run over, Yusuke is given another chance at life and learns to harness his newly awakened spirit energy. Working as a “Spirit Detective” for the Spirit World, Yusuke gains new friends and allies and makes something of himself.

Yusuke’s outfit is based on his appearance in the Dark Tournament arc of the series. While arguably the best arc in the series, I much preferred his “civilian outfit” look from the later arcs.

As with most S.H. Figuarts, the set comes with various alternate optional facial expressions for its corresponding figure.

“Cocky grin” face.

“Seriously annoyed” face.

“Kuwabara!!!!”

“Teeth gritting” face.

“Yelling” face

After training with Genkai, Yusuke successfully learns the Spirit Gun technique, which allows one to focus all of their spiritual energy into his index finger and fire it as a powerful projectile attack. The set includes an effects part one can plug into Yusuke’s right index finger.

A “Spirit Gun” blast effect is included here, it even comes with its own display stand.

Bandai also decided to include Pu (Puu). Yusuke’s Spirit Beast. Pu is a reflection of Yusuke’s true self, as well as his purity of spirit. He loves to sit on top of Yusuke’s head though, which greatly annoys our hero.

Lastly, included with the figure is his “hair let-down” alternate hairstyle. We only briefly get this look in the Anime after Yusuke completed Genkai’s final test for the transfer of the Spirit Orb into Yusuke’s body. His body is severely injured in the process and he looks like this when he first wakes up from his recovery.

To swap the hairstyles, you’ll have to pop the whole head off the neck ball joint.

Overall, I’m pretty happy with it. Yuyu Hakusho was one of the biggest names in Anime back in the day, taking on Dragon Ball Z for the top prime time spot, I’m surprised it took them this long to finally release a figure for this line since Irwin Toys. While there has been no word on whether Bandai will make Yusuke’s pals after they release Younger Toguro, I am hopeful that these sell well enough for Bandai to at least make Kurama, Kuwabara and Hiei. I guess time will tell.

Funfact: Yusuke’s first name literally means “ghost helper”.
