Soul of Chogokin Gx-113 Tryon 3

Story

In the Build Fighters world, Gundam Model kits’ popularity has hit an all-time high thanks to a revolutionary system that allows the kits to be scanned and used as piloted avatars in simulated matches set in a computer-generated world called “Gunpla Battles” The meticulous detail of each Gunpla is fully transferred into the game. The better the build, parts and finish of the completed figure, the greater the performance of the machine in actual “combat”.

The Tryon 3 is one of the most powerful mecha in the series. While not a unit used by the main protagonist, but rather the rival of one of the heroes, it’s appearance in the show was popular enough to gain it a spot in the Soul of Chogokin line.

Display Base

Optional adapter posts for connecting each of the Tryon Units to the display base.

The left and right adapter posts can be swapped around to allow position swapping for Riku Tryon and Umi Tryon on the display base however they wish.

Before you can pose Riku Tryon, you’ll need to prepare the figure a bit when it first comes out of the box. The set comes with the Boomerang Stagger separated from Riku Tryon. I STRONGLY recommend being very careful when installing this piece into Tryon 3’s head.

Remember to pull out the lion’s tail.

How the cannons and shoulders should be positioned.

Riku Tryon

The leader unit of the group. The Riku Tryon is a land-based attack unit.

Aside from its “Savage Fangs” teeth and “Land Claws”, it is also outfitted with Tryon 3’s “Twin Cannons”. Lastly, the machine is also outfitted with small miniguns on the slits on its head called “Whisker Vulcans”.

Umi Tryon

The team’s “marine”-based unit, the Umi Tryon is designed to look similar to a stingray. It can fire disc-shaped beam projectiles called “Circle Wave” and cut opponents using the “Marine Blade” fins on its sides, it can also attack using its extendable and flexible ‘Ocean whip’ tail.

Sora Tryon
For Sora Tryon, you’ll need the display base to hold this unit upright (it’s the heaviest piece in the set). You’ll also need to slap in the effects parts for its “wings” to make it look better.

The aerial unit of the Tryon team, the Sora Tryon resembles an eagle. Its attacks include the “Beak Shocker” bolts from its mouth, plus physical melee attacks in the form of its ‘Sky Grapple’ claws. Lastly, it can also fire numerous feather-like beams from its wings called “Feather Storm”.

I love that the “Sky Grapple” claws on this unit are super articulated. Such detail.

Team Tryon 3!

Let’s Try On!

TRYON 3!

Created by Sakai Minato, leader of the Build Busters team, to represent the Tendaiji Academy for the National Gunpla Tournament. The Tryon 3 is the culmination of Sakai’s love for Super Robots genre and Gunpla building. Despite having so many moving and combining parts, the Tryon 3’s armor is still incredibly durable. It also has immense offensive capabilities, all done without sacrificing its high level of mobility. A true testament to its builder’s skill and passion for the hobby.

When you’re done combining Tryon 3, I strongly recommend replacing the default, small “baby hands” with the better-proportioned ones. Be warned though, they are a HUGE pain to swap in and out.

Remember to maintain the Sky Grapple Claws looking like this after you transform this figure (Lol… I accidentally folded them up to look like ZZ Gundam the first time I did the photoshoot and had to go back and redo some pics).

”Now I’m going to show you! This is the absolutely explosive, ultimately invincible power of Tryon 3!

Tryon 3’s Attacks

Wing Shield and Heat Wing – the forearm-mounted shields on the Tryon 3 function as shields, or can be superheated up and used as melee weapons for slicing up opponents.

Armed Booster! – Tryon 3’s version of Mazinger Z’s Rocket Punch attack.

To set it up, you’ll have to first pull out the forearms, then attach the effects parts and then use sections of the display base to keep the pieces airborne.

Don’t worry about accidentally snapping off the elbow joints, as they’re diecast metal (thank goodness).

You can also use the adapters to elevate the display base arms as you see fit.

Boomerang Stagger! – Tryon 3 uses its helmet’s antennae as a boomerang weapon. The set comes with an alternate larger piece for this move for better visuals.

High Mega Cannon! – Similar to ZZ Gundam’s most powerful attack, the High Mega Cannon is an intense beam fired from the unit’s forehead.

High Beam Saber – Tryon 3 has access to the ZZ Gundam’s massive Beam Sabers. The High Beam Sabers are mounted on the Double Cannonade when not in use.

Dual wield!

Double Cannonade! – the twin cannons on Tryon 3’s backpack lower forward and fire.

Liger Glare! – The lion chest piece shoots strong beams from its eyes. The attack is a throwback to 1976’s Daiku Maryu Gaiking’s “Saur Geyser” beam attack.

Raptor Breaker! – Tryon 3 uses Sora Tryon’s “Sky Grapple Claws” to grab onto an opponent and throw it far away.

Choho Pressure! – the lion chest on Tryon 3 emits shock waves that interferes with the enemy Gunpla’s materials, effectively immobilizing its target and allow for Tryon 3’s finishing move, the ChoHoken.

Hyper Minovsky Chohoken Tryzan – Tryon 3’s ultimate finishing move! Using pieces from various sections of its body, the unit forms a very large and powerful beam sword.

Howl Liger!!

The sword handle is meant to be Umi Tryon’s tail, since the actual tail is too big, you’ll have to use the alternate smaller piece for the sword handle. There’s also a small effects part you can use to allow you to plug the handle into Tryon 3’s chest to recreate the “sword emerging” sequence from the Anime.

Hyper Minovsky!

ChoHoKen! (Super Howling Sword!)

Try-Slash 1! …2! ….3!!!

Display base revisited for Tryon 3 mode.

You’ll have to change the orientation of the display base arm, as well as the adapter.

Last, but not least, the Bandai designers took some design liberties and made the original excess kibble now be able to stay on Tryon 3 after its combination. Something not seen in the Anime.

The Sora Tryon wings effects and head parts, along with the Umi Tryon tail, can all be plugged into designated areas in the backpack.

The Good
-The weigh in:
–Sora Tryon – 573 Grams
–Riku Tryon – 186 Grams
–Umi Tryon – 166 Grams
–Tryon 3 – 899 Grams

-Tryon 3 stands roughly 9.5 inches when fully combined.

-Diecast parts include:
–Most main joints all over the figure.
–Huge sections of Tryon 3’s thighs and lower legs
–Practically entire sections of both knees.
–Feet

-I really love how you can see the diecast parts when you look closely at the main joints. It really stands out.

-The transformation is really cool and somewhat intuitive I must say, particularly when it comes to the rotations in the legs.

-Display base included!

-I love how they made the display base platforms interchangeable for the side unit displays

-I also really love how they decided to make the display base fully functional for the Armed Booster attacks. Something the Gx-71 Voltron didn’t quite have fully executed (no display base arms included for Gx-71).

The Bad
-Swapping the fists is really a chore. I wish they designed the wrist joints to work better.

-Take great care when installing the smaller Boomerang Stagger parts into place on the Riku Tryon (Tryon 3’s forehead). The connection is really, really fragile. I kept worrying it was going to snag on my hand and break.

-No effects parts for the Double Cannonade. I think it would’ve been so cool if they included something here.

-Tryon 3 can’t fully recreate some of the ChoHoKen poses. I guess I half-expected it, seeing as how this is a complex combiner, but I had hoped it had more joints.

-Depending on some angles, Tryon 3’s head can get buried behind the lion chest panel (you can sometimes not see it fully in some photos). I wish they somehow made it to be able to elevate its neck section, so we can see the head from more angles.

The Ugly

No QC issues for me with this release thankfully.

Overall, very impressive set! While the engineering borrows heavily from the ZZ Gundam design, I really love all modifications the designers of the show did to it to make it stand apart from its original design model and be a completely different “Super Robot”.

The only downside I can think of is that this is something of a REALLY niche release. As a unit that didn’t belong to the main hero in the series, but actually a creation by one of the hero team’s rivals. I have no idea how well this release sold for Bandai, but it definitely is one of the better designed and executed “complex” Soul of Chogokin combiners in recent times.
