Transformers Age of the Primes Titan Class Star Optimus Prime

While the box isn’t quite “Titan Class”-sized, it still spans rough 17 x 13 x 4.5 inches in dimension.

Micromaster Hot Rod

Hot Rod is now a Micromaster in the Transformers Battlestars saga. In the Legends comic universe after leaving the role of Autobot leadership, he transferred his consciousness into a Micromaster body and became the leader of the Micromasters. Establishing a new civilization on the planet Micro. When Optimus Prime was revived as Star Optimus Prime, Hot Rod returned to his leader’s side, occasionally serving as an additional power source when inside his commander’s chest.

Ehh… I guess he’s OK, not really super articulated as one would hope. But at least Hasbro didn’t cheap out and gave us the terrible Core Class Rodimus again here. That thing was ridiculously hollow (and cheap!).

Too bad we don’t have any effects parts to plug into this guy.

MT-13 Trailer

A transport vehicle for carrying Micromasters. It is labeled MT-13 as it is meant for Star Optimus Prime, aka the thirteenth Prime. The number is also a reference to the original Star Convoy toy’s having the 12th Micro Trailer in the “Return of Convoy” toy series back in the day. All MT units were used to transport Mircomasters.

Naturally, Hot Rod can be also loaded into the Micro Trailer.

The cab section can be disengaged and transformed into a cannon attachment.

The set comes with cannons that you can mount onto the top of the trailer for Hot Rod to use. Effects parts can be plugged into the cannons.

The battle platform does remind one of the Battle Station Rodimus Prime had, doesn’t it?

Star Optimus Prime

The original Autobot leader, resurrected thanks to the efforts of the Autobot Battlestars team. Optimus Prime is reborn as Star Optimus Prime! That was the story before. Now, in the Age of the Primes storyline, his backstory has been changed into one where Star Optimus Prime was one of the original Thirteen Primes created by the Cybertronian god Primus to stop Unicron. While G1 Optimus Prime would be the later reincarnation of this heroic Transformer.

It’s a shame they didn’t paint Prime’s eyes with a brighter shade of blue, or even have some light piping in there to liven up his optics.

Star Optimus stands roughly 15 inches tall.

As a Titan Class figure, his hands can open up.

The back of Prime’s legs can open up to reveal storage compartments for MT-13 and the Matrix weapon hilt.

His chest opens up to reveal the Zodiac, one of the ancient Cybertronian artifacts of power bestowed by Primus to his creations.

Micromaster Hot Rod can also ride inside the Zodiac Chamber. His new role as Star Optimus’ buddy is that he can power up Optimus when the latter needs a power boost.

The Zodiac can be removed and plugged into Prime’s hands to make it look like he’s holding it.

Naturally, Star Optimus comes with a rifle. There’s an Energon bullet included with the set that can be loaded into a chamber in the rifle.

The rifle can be plugged with several effects parts included with the set, for added visual effect.

Aside from the rifle, Prime can also use the gun for MT-13.

Sigh… annoyingly, the effects parts on my copy are a bit warped at the tips.

When all else fails, Optimus can use the guns on his shoulders as well.

Lastly, Prime also comes with a Matrix of sorts. In this case, the Matrix and be held on its side and formed to make an energy weapon when plugged with the effects parts.

Star Optimus Prime, ready for action!

“Space truck” mode

Star Optimus’ guns can be mounted up top.

Naturally, the effects parts can be plugged into the guns.

With Hot Rod

Hot Rod can be loaded into the trailer.

The truck mode spans roughly 18 inches in length.

Battle station base mode

The Zodiac chamber

Base mode fully populated.

Hot Rod and the mobile turret can be plugged into the base here.

You can swivel the turret around by turning this blue disc. Pretty cool.

Lastly, Hot Rod can ride inside the Zodiac Chamber, just like in the robot mode.

Overall, a pretty OK set. Admittedly, it doesn’t really impress compared to the older Titan Classes, mainly due to its size. But it is a nice update to the classic Star Convoy figure and it does come with some very nice details and tooling.

Admittedly, it’s kind of in a weird spot for me personally, as it’s not big enough to be a proper Titan Class, all while it should ideally be a bit smaller to properly scale better with the other “Primes” in the Age of the Primes line. At least it’s not priced too badly compared to an actual Titan, so it’s got that working for it.

Speaking of the “Primes” in this line, I actually passed on getting the other “Primes” as the scale to each other doesn’t work when you throw Optimus into the mix. Worse, the colors are all over the place when you don’t have Optimus in the group, too. Everything’s too dull in terms of color. It’s like a throwback to the Michael Bay takes on Transformers, practically everything is gray or black. Just boring to look at.
