Doctor Strange (Movie Version- Astral Form)

I can’t say I’m a big fan of how they did the Astral form here, it is an improvement over the totally clear (and easily yellows) version you’d expect like from the SDCC 2016 set, but somehow this one leaves me cold and unimpressed.

Boo!

Like the solid version, the astral form version also comes with a removable Eye of Agamoto.

Doctor Strange (Marvel Now Version)

Doctor Strange is a reissue from the 2015 Avengers 2 Hulkbuster series, just comes with his iconic cloak.

The figure also comes with his usual effects parts.

Comparison with the previously released version

The main difference is the lack of the skirt in this wave, replaced with a cape. The base figure is still the same though.

Brother Voodoo

Another reissue, this figure was released in the 2015 SDCC set, but I prefer the version here since I didn’t really like the painted skull on the face of the SDCC one.

I like the green staff of the SDCC over the blue one here though.

Karl Mordo (Movie Version)

The likeness for Chiwetel Ejiofor (I had to look up the spelling for his name hehe) is not too shabby, it’s not perfect but I think it’s a way better job than the Chris Evans Cap in the ML MCU figs.

Doctor Strange (Movie Version)

Hmm? I never noticed the cloak had some design details to it in the movie. Interesting.

I really loved the Doctor Strange movie, despite some of the plotholes (he couldn’t go back in time and save the ancient one?) I really enjoyed the effects and some of the lighter moments (with Wong). I hope the likely sequel will be just as good.

The shield comes with a handle so Strange can hold it up. Just like Cap eh?

I laughed out with the scenes with the cloak in the movie. It was fun in a creative way (even if in the comics I don’t think we ever saw the cloak as sentient).

The likeness for Benedict Cumberbatch isn’t quite all there, but it’s close enough.

Strange comes with a removable Eye of Agamoto (one of the Infinity Stones)

With his “astral form”

“Hey Thor, refill your beer for you?”

Enchantress

Originally, when fans heard that Enchantress was finally getting a ML figure in the SDCC boxset, they were ecstatic, that soon soured when Hasbro announced the release of a regular retail version in this wave.

I prefer this version over the SDCC, as the darker green parts provide better contrast to the green on the rest of the figure. But I think the SDCC is the version more accurate to the comics, at least as far as the shade of green goes?

Nico Minoru

Nico Minoru is a Japanese-American teen Marvel introduced back in 2003 under their Runaways title. She is one of the most powerful magicians in the Marvel Universe thanks to her Staff of One, which can be used to cast any spell imaginable.

The (newer) Staff of One comes with an energy effect. The staff in the comics emerges from Nico’s chest and is said to be so powerful than even Dormammu fears it’s power. The only weakness of the staff is that it cannot cast the same spell twice.

Later on, when Nico is killed and resurrected, she gains a new left arm which allows her to cast spells even without the Staff.

I’m not too comfy with the swapping the arms too often as the peg for the arm looks REALLY small and could break easily…?

Iron Fist

When I first heard about Iron Fist getting another release in the ML wave, I was really bummed out. But now that I have the figure, it has totally blown me away. It’s a huge improvement over the first version released waaaay back in the old Odin wave. The leaner body and improved head sculpt really put this figure over the top. That plus added accessories and effects just push it even further. I think this is my favorite figure in this wave.

Check out that head sculpt, he looks really focused.

He comes with “normal” hands.

But the “energized” hands look awesome!

Throw in the flaming hands and it’s perfect! Kudos to whoever designed this figure!

Dormammu

Well, no surprise here. I think ever since we got the SDCC boxset it’s a given that this guy would pop up later on as BAF figure. Sure it’s a bit disappointing that we’re getting him again instead of a new character, but the figure itself isn’t too shabby. It still has some trouble standing sometimes due to the boot design though.

The SDCC version seems a bit too dark now for me, the brighter colors on this one seem to look better.

Flaming skulls

Comparison with the SDCC 2015 version

And there we have it. This wave is heavily peppered with reissues and reused characters (more than half of the wave actually, counting Dormammu). It’s definitely a downer in some aspects. But on the upside, at least it will give folks who missed out on the SDCC Dormammu, Enchantress and Brother Voodoo a chance to get the characters. Plus it’s a direct reissue and the new paint apps and accessories kind of do make up for some of it. I just wish SDCC sets we’re so darn expensive, or at least make it more accessible to the general public.
