Marvel Legends Fantastic Four: First Steps Movie Wave

Mister Fantastic
Invisible Woman
Johnny Storm
The Thing
Human Torch
Silver Surfer

I gotta say, the boxart looks really good for this wave, it has its own unique style, separating it from the normal MCU packaging.

Mister Fantastic

The leader of the Fantastic Four and the smartest man on the planet, Reed Richards’ ability to stretch any part of his body at will allows him to reach things far out of a normal person’s grasp. He is also able to use his stretched arms to pull himself up to higher levels as well as wrap his whole body around others.

The head sculpt perfectly captures the likeness of actor Pedro Pascal!

The forearms have a weird cut for the elbow joints though. It’s very awkward to look at when you see it.

Reed comes with a wrist communicator on his right arm. Be careful not to lose it when you swap out his hands.

Aside from the optional hands, the set comes with optional stretched out arms for Reed. They’re bendy, too! But it is VERY hard to bend them for some reason. Not the standard rubbery material most folks are used to, hopefully the material won’t deteriorate too quickly over time.

Invisible Woman

Susan Storm is Reed Richard’s wife. After the accident that gave the team their powers, Sue gained the ability to turn invisible by bending light around her, as well as create force fields that can block or push away any opponent.

The head sculpt likeness for actress Vanessa Kirby seems a bit off for me. Maybe she didn’t sign off on her likeness being 100% spot on? Kind of like Bill Murray for Ghostbusters figures.

As with most Marvel Legends figures now, she doesn’t come with much, just alternate hands…

… along with a large “invisible barrier”.

For some reason, her barrier is made with bullet marks on the surface. Odd.

It’s a shame Sue doesn’t come with more alternate hands, I think this figure would’ve benefited greatly from additional expressive hand poses for her power set.

Johnny Storm

Jonathan Lowell Spencer “Johnny” Storm is Susan’s younger brother. An expert researcher, he was tasked to go with Reed Richards and his crew on their flight into outer space to study cosmic rays. After being exposed to cosmic radiation, his body mutates and he gains the ability generate fire from his body and control it.

The likeness for actor Joseph Quinn seems a bit off as well, the chin seems too rounded?

It’s strange but Johnny’s spare hands aren’t painted. Unlike Reed’s

At first glance, I thought Johnny and Reed shared the same body mold, but looking more closely, they actually have some specific differences, with the exception of the shoulders, forearms and thighs.

Johnny comes with flame effects parts. They’re the same ones we’ve been getting for close to a decade now. C’mon Hasbro…

The Thing

Benjamin Jacob “Ben” Grimm is Reed’s best friend and an accomplished United States Air Force test pilot. Kind-hearted and righteous, Ben’s skin mutated into something similar to rock-like in appearance while also gaining incredible superhuman strength.

The elbows on the figure are just single jointed. Boo…

Heh.. the “4” logo on the pants was an odd thing to see.

I honestly hoped we could’ve gotten a “dressed” Thing instead of this half-naked version. As this “look” only appeared for a few seconds in a flashback sequence in the film, while for the rest of the movie, Ben is actually sensibly dressed.

While it’s great that Ben looks actually a lot like his comic book counterpart, I can’t say I like the way his voice acting was done without the usual gravelly undertone we would normally get from Ben in all other media before this movie. His voice sounds too.. normal. It’s strange.

“It’s Clobberin’ Time!” – In the movie, we find out that his catch phrase is just something cooked up in the “in universe” cartoon series and Ben is actually annoyed whenever he’s asked to say the line in real life.

Human Torch

Johnny Storm’s “Flame On” mode, where he turns into a human fireball.

The figure is a general reuse of the Johnny Storm body, cast in clear red plastic with some added effects sculpted in.

I think this is probably the coolest figure in the set.

With Johnny Storm

Do note that Torch comes with the same wrist communicator as Johnny on his left arm, so make sure not to lose it when you’re swapping his hands (I almost lost mine as I didn’t realize the communicator was present).

Since Johnny’s power allows him to turn to create and control flame, he can also use it to propel himself through the air. He is the only member of the team that can fly.

Using a Third-Party display base to get more mileage out of this figure.

Silver Surfer

Shalla-Bal is the herald of Galactus known as the Silver Surfer. She offered herself to the planet-eater in order to spare her home planet of Zenn-la from being consumed. As his herald, she now must explore the cosmos looking for new planets for her master to feed on to sustain his existence.

At first look, one would think these marks were some sort of impurity mixed into the plastic, but it turns out they are actually intentional? In order to make the figure more similar to the onscreen look for the character, I suppose. I can’t say I like how it turned out, though. It’s kinda messy to look at.

The likeness for actress Julia Garner is kinda spot on, I guess.

Her surfboard comes with a display base for added visual effect.

As a herald imbued with a portion of the Power Cosmic, Silver Surfer can survive the vacuum of space, travel at speeds faster than light speeds on her surfboard, as well as manipulate cosmic energy.

The figure comes with an alternate “cupping” right hand, for holding her board.

It’s not easy, but eventually I did manage to get the figure to stand while holding onto her board.

With the Human Torch.

While I get the premise of making Silver Surfer Shalla-Bal, instead of Norrin Radd, in order to have a more interesting connection for Johnny Storm, I really think they should’ve just made her a different herald altogether, instead of gender swapping an established and popular comics character, which seemed to really turn off fans big time.

Marvel’s “First Family” of superheroes.

The full wave

Overall, not bad, at least the wave generally captures the look of the characters on the big screen, for better or for worse (except maybe for Ben, he should come wearing the top of his uniform).

While the movie was not the best Fantastic Four Movie we could have gotten, at least it wasn’t worse. Honestly, the most distracting part of the movie for me was seeing Reed with a moustache, as it just takes you out of the scene. Kind of like seeing Superman with a moustache or something akin to it. It just shouldn’t be there. It was even more jarring to see it in the classic animation clip in the post credits scene, as it trampled on my memory of the show from my childhood. Sigh..

It’s also a shame Hasbro didn’t think to include H.E.R.B.I.E. (Humanoid Experimental Robot B-Type Integrated Electronics) as a Build-A-Figure for this wave, as that would’ve been a nice bonus. Heck, for the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3, we got an astronaut dog for a BAF!

I’m still on the fence as to whether I want to hunt down the popcorn bucket Fantasticar that was exclusive only to certain cinemas in the US.
