David

Optimus Prime is the brave, inspiring commander of the Autobots. Always standing up for those who cannot protect themselves, he embodies the best qualities in a leader as he fights to end the tyranny of the Decepticons.

I’m not really sure what Newage Toys was thinking when they went with the “David” name, I wish they cooked up a better codename for their “not Optimus Prime” figure.

As the figure is meant to be in scale for Legends Class, it stands at roughly 4.5 inches tall.

The figure is super impressive, sporting some solid “Masterpiece”-style engineering and poseability, while capturing the look of the character, plus with lots of paint detail thrown in. It also has a bit of diecast metal, mainly in its spine section for durability and heft.

It’s not perfect, though. One point of contention for some folks is the way the chest panel is presented as an alternate piece. It looks a bit awkward from certain angles as it does break the line art.

It stands out a lot from this angle. But for the most part, you rarely notice it.

The set offers spare heads for David, based on the changing look for the animation models for Optimus Prime. I prefer the default head though.

I appreciate how posey the figure is, it’s even got toe articulation.

This thing is really is a lot of fun to handle. It looks great in almost any pose.

Of course, no Optimus Prime figure is complete without his iconic Ion Blaster.

Next up, “David” comes the Energon Axe. Just unplug the fist and swap in the axe.

Lastly, the figure comes with the Autobot Matrix of Leadership. Too bad the figure can’t hold the Matrix, though.

Roller

Roller is Prime’s drone unit. Remote controlled by Optimus for scouting behind enemy territory, Roller is like an extension of Optimus Prime himself. One drawback is any damage sustained by any of the modules is felt by Optimus as well.

Roller’s rear section can be folded out to allow the drone to pull the trailer unit.

Trailer – The trailer section features deployable stabilizers when not connected to Prime’s cab section.

The trailer opens up to become a combat deck.

Missile-armed repair drone.

Parking section for Roller.

The entire trailer can also be positioned vertically to serve as a maintenance dock for Optimus Prime.

Lastly, the bottom section of the trailer can be disengaged and connected to the repair drone to give it more mobility in a battlefield.

The repair drone’s c0ckpit actually opens up. Sadly, there aren’t many figures that small that can fit inside. Maybe Zoids pilots?

Prime and his other two modules.

Overall, I am very surprised at the level of detail Newage pulled off here. It really does feel like a Masterpiece figure on a Legends Class scale. Well done, Newage Toys!

Admittedly, the chest panel “cheat” can be a bit unusual to look at from certain angles, but generally, you rarely notice it.

I would probably jump into getting more figures from this line, but I’ve got way too many lines going on already. Something nice to backtrack later on, I suppose. But for now, anyone who’s looking to get this guy, you won’t be disappointed.

Special thanks again to my good buddy for lending me his copy to fiddle around with (you know who you are).
