Transformers Fans Toys FT-16M Sovereign (Masterpiece Galvatron)
Fanstoys items usually come with an outer plastic baggie to protect the box. MY M Sovereign didn’t for some reason but I think it I’ve seen some that do have the outer baggie?
Since these are Third Party, non-official items, it’s best to get some stickers from Reprolabels/Toyhax.com to make these guys more “toon-accurate”.
To apply, I find the best way to stick the stickers on is to use the tip of a blade, this way you have more control over the application, as compared to using just your fingers. You can also use the blade to help gently peel off a corner of the sticker in case you didn’t center it right and need to re-apply.
Galvatron is the “upgraded” form of Megatron after his defeat at the hands of Optimus Prime in there final battle. He is much more powerful than Megatron ever was. Following his battle with Rodimus Prime on Unicron, Galvatron landed in a lava pit on the planet Thrull, prolonged stasis while in the “plasma bath” damaged permanently Galvatron’s sanity, making him truly mad and unpredictably dangerous to both friend and foe alike.
Diecast Matrix of Leadership on a chain is still included.
The particle cannon effects parts – Even back in the old regular Sovereign, this piece was a dismal failure for me. Due to the many connections and soft material used, the part tends to droop down when you plug it in.
Fortunately, it’s not so bad if you take out some of the other pieces, it shortens and lightens the load so it doesn’t droop too terribly. It still looks a bit off though.
Flight stand
The flight stand pegs into Sovereigns crotch, like so.
The effects parts failure is even more prominent here. I wish they just went with a more sturdier plastic. Tsk.
Sovereign stands roughly 10.25 inches and weighs a whooping 857 Grams.
Diecast parts include:
–Chest
–Shoulders
–Torso
–Waist
–Thighs (?)
–Knees
–Feet
Both solid and clear versions of his particle cannon are included.
As with the first version of Sovereign, the particle cannon still mounts on his forearms via plastic on plastic friction. I’m not too crazy about this. I wish they improved this connection with something better?
His backpack is supposed to peg into the cannon stabilizer to keep things locked and in place.
Alternate “angry” face plate is included. You’ll need to unscrew the head halves first to do the swap though.
With official Masterpiece MP-09 Rodimus Prime.
Here he is with Power of the Primes Rodimus Prime. I decided to toss this in for comparison, since my son had his unit lying around. 😉
Comparison with original Sovereign. It’s pretty much a redeco.
Interestingly, 16M Sovereign does NOT come with optional face parts for Fans Toys Tesla (Perceptor). Only the regular Sovereign has this accessory. It’s fine I guess, since Fans Toys is making a 2.0 version of Tesla with better toon accuracy look.
Overall, I like the colors here better than on the original Sovereign. The bluish purple matches the 1986 colors almost perfectly, while the original Sovereign matches the TV season 3 colors. This figure is beautiful, heavy with lots of diecast and the transformation is just the right amount of complexity. The only real downsides are the removal of the Tesla parts and the reuse of the lousy effects parts from the old Sovereign with zero improvements.
On a Personal note, I really loved the late Leonard Nimoy’s deeper voicing of Galvatron, hence my reason for getting this version of the toy. For some reason Frank Welker’s version of Galvatron’s voice for the TV series was annoyingly whiney. It was one of the big turn offs for me when I watched season 3 back in the day. I wish Welker continued Nimoy’s deep Galvatron voice instead, we know it’s in his repertoire, since he’s done deep voices like Soundwave and Dr. Klaw from Inspector Gadget.
I’ll probably sell my regular Sovereign since I just need one definitive version per character to work with when it comes to Masterpieces.
