Transformers Masterpiece MPG-17 Optimus Prime
You can actually hook up MP-44 Prime’s trailer to this version.
With a little help from that clear plastic block, Prime’s weapons can be combined up to allow for them to all be mounted on his alt mode.
Leader of the Autobots, Optimus Prime’s courage and strength have long set an example for all Autobots who follow him into batlte to stop Megatron and the evil Decepticons.
Based on the Generations-styled look for Prime, this new release resembles the stylized look for Prime from the 2000s Transformers toyline, rather than the classic cartoon design of the 1980s.
MPG-17 Optimus Prime stands roughly 9.5 inches tall.
Thanks to the light-piping gimmick, Prime’s eyes look really, really good. Very cool.
However, I wish the designers went with clear blue window panels for the chest. The black just throws me off.
Just like in truck mode, having the clear plastic block in certain configurations allow for Prime to stow away all of his weapons on his back.
The set also comes with an adapter for Prime so he can be displayed mounted on one of the Masterpiece Transformers Display bases (not included with this set though).
Since this is Prime based on the Generations toyline, the engineers left his shoulders having this odd piece sticking out. I kind of wish they didn’t.
Prime features some articulation on his fingers.
Naturally, Optimus comes with his iconic Ion Blaster.
Next up, Optimus has his trusty Energon Axe.
For more play value, Takara Tomy decided to include live-action film-inspired Battle Blades for this set.
With the help of the clear plastic block, you can mount Prime’s rifle on his back to make him look even more impressive when he’s holding his Battle Blades. .
Supposedly, the shoulder-mounted rifle is based on an unused Diaclone concept gimmick for Battle Convoy from back in the day.
The set also comes with a “War for Cybertron: Siege-inspired “Strikeshield”/ Battle Axe”
While the shield mode isn’t impressive (I feel it should be bigger). The Axe mode looks seriously cool!
Lastly, Prime comes with the Autobot Matrix of Leadership.
Thanks to the toy’s shoulder design, he can hold the Matrix!
Overall, the figure is amazing! I love the play value and how cool the light-piped eyes and new weapons all look! Transformation is also intuitive and fun.
Sadly, it’s not quite perfect. The figure doesn’t come with any diecast parts outside of the Matrix. As far as I can tell, this release is all plastic. I wish the engineers put some diecast in there somewhere, maybe in the feet? The use of black chest windows is also a bit disappointing. I get the reference to the Generations-era darker chest panels, but they could’ve gone with a less darker shade for the clear chest pieces.
