Transformers Masterpiece MP-31 Delta Magnus

Ahh… Delta Magnus, I think when they first announced Masterpiece Ultra Magnus, we all pretty much expected this guy to follow. Originally hailing from the Diaclone line as “Powered Convoy”, a powered up version for Optimus Prime, Takara changed the color scheme and it became Ultra Magnus. The colors of this character are a homage to the original Diaclone.

According to the Masterpiece toy’s bio, he is a member of the Primal Vanguard, their function is to temporarily hold onto the Matrix should the current Matrix keeper fall in battle. It is also mentioned in the bio that he was first choice to be the Autobot City Commander but declined and the position was given to Ultra Magnus. He later took up the post of Autobot City Commander after Ultra Magnus was killed in his final battle with Sixshot in the Japanese Transformers Headmasters cartoons.

Delta Magnus doesn’t come with “Matrix-holding” extra hands like Ultra Magnus, but he does come with extra face plats for Ultra Magnus. The eyes this time around are a bit raised and squarish, giving off a “shades” or “lens” effect for Ultra Magnus’ eyes.

His rifle weapon is the Energy Shotgun.

While his shoulder rockets are called “Spear of Glory”. I can’t say that with a straight face. The rockets don’t fire but are removable from the launchers.

Since he is a redeco of Ultra Magnus, the Matrix Chamber is still there.

Like Ultra Magnus, he has a removable face plate.

Psst… it’s really me, Optimus Prime.

Delta Magnus also comes with a “yelling” face, similar to Ultra Magnus.

The spare face plates can be stored on a flap on the back.

Retro G1 toy shot.

Vehicle mode

The energy shotgun can be stored here in vehicle mode.

The front cab of the vehicle mode can be detached (so you can swap it around with Optimus Prime in vehicle mode).

With his “Pen pal”, Marissa Fairborn (they were pen pals according to Delta’s bio).

Marissa Fairborn – In a bit of Transformers X G.i. Joe, it’s speculated that Marissa (who appeared in Season 3 of the G1 cartoons) is the daughter of Flint and Lady Jaye from the G.i. Joe team. The figure here has a terrible head sculpt though.

Marissa can ride inside the cab.

Overall, not bad, its got the same bells and whistles as Ultra Magnus, it also got a lot of heft due to the diecast feet and lower sections of the body (weighs over 1 Kilo!) I like the color scheme and I think it works very well if you’ve got the other “Diaclone homage” Masterpiece figures, he can really stand out as the Masterpiece recolors’ team leader (at least, that’s what I’m going with).
