Transformers Legacy G1 Optimus Prime

Wise, inspiring and self-sacrificing. Optimus Prime embodies the best qualities of all Cybertronians. He leads the Autobots in their never-ending battle against the evil Decepticons.

Legacy G1 Optimus stands roughly 5.25 inches tall, making it shorter than the original G1 toy.

Thanks to the new redesign, the figure, similar to the “Missing Link” toyline, features lots of articulation missing from the vintage toys, including ankle tilt joints.

I also love the return of light piping for his eyes.

Prime comes with two variations of his iconic Ion Blaster. One based on his original “leaner” G1 toy’s rifle and the other based on the later redesign of the same accessory from later production runs.

Dual wield!

When not in use, the rifle can be posted onto Prime’s back for storage.

Prime also comes with his trusty Energon Axe.

As a newly invented feature, Prime’s smokestacks can be removed and used as pistols.

Of course, Optimus comes with the Autobot Matrix of Leadership.

Prime’s truck mode can accommodate the original G1 trailer, as well as the more recent Earthrise trailer (not sure about Studio Series 86 though as I haven’t picked that up yet).

Surprisingly, this set comes with soft PVC rubber tires for prime. I think this is the first time we’re getting PVC rubber tires for Prime in the modern release. The only other figures to have rubber tires was the original G1 and its subsequent reissues.

Be careful when transforming Prime, I felt this section was a bit tricky to do as the hinge joint didn’t want to move at first.

All of Prime’s weapons can be loaded onto the truck mode (provided a trailer isn’t hitched).

Just for fun, I decided to pull off the iconic pose from the 1986 movie, with some help from a third-party released display base. Needless to say, Prime does it flawlessly.

Overall, pretty cool. He’s actually pretty fun to mess with. It’s too bad it is a bit on the shorter side and it doesn’t come with its own trailer. But at the end of the day, I’m a happy camper with this figure. It kind of reminds of Takara’s Robot Masters Optimus Prime.

I wonder if they’ll branch this off into its own G1 toyline-inspired super articulated sub-line? Though it’s going to be going up against Takara’s Missing Link line if it does.
